Oxford Communicative Development Inventory
(A UK adaptation of the MacArthur CDI)

This checklist of words is a tool for assessing the development of receptive and productive vocabulary through parental report. We typically use it for children aged from about 11 to 26 months. Also available for download is a database containing (anonymous) results for several hundred children. A summary of this data is given below in the graph showing vocabulary size by age.

You can download the OCDI and the OCDI database:

  1. The Oxford CDI includes 416 words, and is laid out suitably for automated scoring. Download the Oxford CDI as: Word 97 (138Kb), or PostScript (296Kb).

If you use the OCDI, please cite:

  2. The OCDI Database currently contains responses for 547 children aged 9.5-27.2 months. The OCDI Database is downloadable in three separate files:

    File 1: Tab-delimited data 1 (234Kb)

    File 2: Tab-delimited data 2 (270Kb)

    File 3: Tab-delimited data 3 (62Kb)

The graphs below show how the number of words produced and understood by children changes as a function of children's age. These graphs were generated from the OCDI Database by taking a moving average across 20 children.
