What happens when you arrive at the BabyLab?

We will phone when we have a study suited to your child's age, and ask you to come to the BabyLab. Then we will send you some more information about the work we do, and (for older infants) a questionnaire about your child's vocabulary.

The main entrance to the Department of Experimental Psychology is on South Parks Road. Walk through to the reception where Janet and Pat will call one of us to come and meet you.

Before we start the study in the BabyLab we'll give you and your child a chance to settle into your surroundings, telling you more about the study whilst your child plays.

During the study, your child will sit on your lap in front of a video screen or a display of objects for about ten minutes. Often we will ask you to wear headphones and close your eyes so that your reactions do not influence your child. Babies participating in our studies see images of objects or animals and may hear a voice telling them where to look. We measure how long they look at the displays to discover what they understand about what they are hearing and seeing.

When the study is over, we can show you the images that your child saw, and the video of your child's eye movements. To thank you for participating we'll give you a BabyLab t-shirt, or cover your travel expenses.
