SCARR
\

In December 2004 I started work as a postdoc on an ESRC project investigating the role of Interpersonal affect in risk taking in collaboration with Dr. Brian Parkinson. Brian Parkinson is the Principal Investigator and grant holder for this project which is part of the ESRC priority network on 'Social Contexts and Responses to Risk' (SCARR).\
               http://www.kent.ac.uk/scarr/index.htm
\

When you encounter a decision situation where one or more of the possible choice options involve an element of risk, you might not only take your own emotional reaction or existing mood into account, as some research shows, but also consider the (verbal and nonverbal) emotional reaction of people who are close to you (family and friends). What these people display in their face can either represent their genuine emotional reactions to the risky situation or possibly the emotion they want to express in order to influence your decision. To this purpose, the person might for instance change or exaggerate their facial expression. The goal of the project is to investigate the role of the various (inter)personal affective processes in risk taking.
\

Within the project we have conducted several studies, including 2 diary studies where we asked participants to fill in a questionnaire whenever they make a decision which involves a certain element of risk or uncertainty. The questionnaires were followed by an interview which will be used to explore some of the decision situations, the associated risk and affective responses.
\

We have also completed two experimental studies investigating the effects of visual access to another person's facial expressions during risky decision-making. Both studies involved pairs of participants (contestants and helpers) collaborating in a computer-controlled quiz-game with varying access to the facial expression of the other. In addition to this we have completed an internet survey of risky decision situations and an interaction study which combined the diary methodology with observational and video-cued recall procedures.
\

The project has been completed and we will now concentrate on writing up the remaining studies as well as starting work on a new network grant: EROS.
\

EROS
\

The research network, funded by the ESRC, brings together investigators from a number of psychological and health disciplines to study fundamental and applied questions concerning Emotion Regulation of Others and Self (EROS).\
               http://www.erosresearch.org/
\

Facial expression in conversation
\

This is ongoing research in collaboration with Dr. Marcia Smith Pasqualini, School of Psychology, Avila University, Kansas City, USA. At present we are looking at the patterns of nonverbal behaviour in interactions between spouses and interactions between strangers. Specifically we are looking at the influence of Parkinson's Disease on both the level of expressivity and the pattern of facial expressions (e.g. if A smiles, does B smile; is there a delay in response? etc). Facial expressions were coded with the Facial Action Coding System (Ekman & Friesen, 1978; Ekman, Friesen & Hagen, 2002) as well as subjective rating scales.
\

Patient education in Parkinson's disease (EduPark)
\

The aim of this pan-European project, which was carried out with the financial support from the EU, was to develop and evaluate an education programme for people with Parkinson's disease and their carers. The project is based at the University of Portsmouth, Department of Psychology. The education programme, which consists of 8, 1.5 hour sessions, focuses on psycho-social support for patients and carers and deals with issues such as depression, anxiety, the burden of care and social support. The development and implementation stages of the project have now been completed and resulted in a manual in seven different languages. A manual has now been published in each of the 7 countries for the use of professionals wishing to conduct the education programme.
\

Other research interests
\

Emotional experience and facial expression in the general population; the influence of social context on facial expressivity; emotional and non emotional facial expressivity in people with Parkinson's Disease (PD); facial expression, emotional experience and mental health (depression and schizophrenia); the relation between emotional experience and eating behaviour; regulation of crying in adults.
\
